National Mathematics Day- December 22

• India celebrated National Mathematics Day on December 22.
• It marked the birth anniversary of the great mathematician Srinivasa Ramanujan.
• It was initiated in 2012.
• In 2012, Dr. Manmohan Singh declared this day to honor Ramanujan's immense contribution to mathematics.

About Ramanujan

• Srinivasa Ramanujan was born on December 22, 1887, in Erode, Tamil Nadu.
•  He mastered trigonometry by the age of 12. 
• In 1917, Ramanujan was elected to the London Mathematical Society.
• His biography is ‘ The man who knows infinity’.

About Deepa Malik

• Deepa Malik is India’s first-ever female Paralympic medalist.
• She won a silver medal in shot put at the 2016 Rio Paralympics. 
• Her career as a para-athlete is decorated with 23 international medals.
• She was given Padma Shri, Khel Ratna Award, Arjuna Award.
• She served as the first female president of the Paralympic Committee of India.
• She is currently the South Asian region representative on the executive board of the Asian Paralympic Committee.

Former Supreme Court Judge Madan Lokur Appointed to Lead UN’s Internal Justice Council

• Retired Supreme Court judge Madan B Lokur has been appointed chairperson of the United Nations Internal Justice Council.
• Justice Lokur retired from the Supreme Court on December 31, 2018, after serving as a judge of the top court for over six years.

About Internal Justice Council

• The Internal Justice Council comprises five members appointed by the Secretary-General. 
• The other four members on the list are Carmen Artigas (Uruguay), Rosalie Balkin (Australia), Stefan Brezina (Austria) and Jay Pozenal (United States of America).
• The UN General Assembly established the Internal Justice Council (IJC) as part of the new internal justice system.
• The IJC members are appointed by the Secretary General.
