China is to build World’s largest dam on Brahmaputra near India border
- China has approved the construction of the world’s largest dam on the Brahmaputra River.
- It is located in Tibet near the Indian border.
- It is poised to cost approximately $137 billion.
- The dam will be built on the lower section of the Yarlung Zangbo River, the Tibetan name for the Brahmaputra.
- The hydropower facility is estimated to generate over 300 billion kWh of electricity annually.
About Brahmaputra River
- The Brahmaputra is one of the major rivers in Asia.
- Originates from the Angsi Glacier near Mount Kailash in southwestern Tibet, at an elevation of about 5,150 meters
- Called the Yarlung Tsangpo River in Tibet.
- Takes a sharp U-turn at the Great Bend near Namcha Barwa in Arunachal Pradesh
- Enters India through Arunachal Pradesh, where it is known as the Siang/Dihang River.
- In Assam, it is called the Brahmaputra.
- In Bangladesh, it merges with the Padma River (Ganga) and is called the Jamuna.
According to RBI, Current account deficit narrows to $11.2 bn
- The country’s current account deficit moderated to $11.2 billion, or 1.2 per cent of gross domestic product (GDP), in July-September 2024 quarter
- It was $11.3 billion, or 1.3 per cent of GDP, in the same period of the previous fiscal.
- Private transfer receipts, mainly representing remittances by Indians employed overseas, increased to $31.9 billion.
- Non-resident deposits (NRI deposits) recorded net inflows of $6.2 billion in the second quarter.
